First grade debut



In November 1920 St George was successful in petitioning the NSWRL for promotion after the demise of the Annandale Rugby League Club. In February 1921 at the Kogarah School of Arts, the St George District Rugby League Club came into being. Arthur Jager was elected as the first president. Joe McGrath was named as Secretary and Arthur Moynow was named as Treasurer. The clubs first captain was Herb Gilbert who joined the club as captain-coach. The clubs first First Grade game in the Sydney premiership was set to take place April 23 1921 on St George’s day against Glebe. The team went down in a narrow defeat 4-3. With George Carstairs scoring the clubs First Grade try. The club recorded their first win in the NSWRL first grade competition defeating Newtown 11-9. St George District RLFC finished its first season in 7th place with 2 wins, 1 bye and 6 losses. Norths ended up winning the 1921 competition with Wests getting the wooden spoon.
